Catalysing Digital Inclusion, Bridging Seniors and Technology

Senior citizens are often left out of the design of spaces as many are intimidated by the process, or do not possess the language to participate. When we were commissioned with Participate in Design to rethink and co-create a Smart Seniors Applied Learning Centre at The Majestic, to be used by elderly residents beyond the Kreta Ayer Neighbourhood, we focused on using a participatory design process to demystify the design process for the elderly participants and stakeholders. The eventual outcome reflects the needs and aspirations of the seniors and stakeholders as well as bridges the gaps between seniors and technology.
President Halimah Yacob officially launched the Majestic Smart Seniors Applied Learning Centre (MSSALC) in Chinatown on 18th February 2022. This project by RSVP Singapore, in partnership with Singapore Pools and CapitaLand Hope Foundation, the philanthropic arm of CapitaLand Group, seeks to provide a safe space for seniors to discover and build their confidence to use the latest in digital technology so that these will be part of their daily lifestyle. With the support from CapitaLand Hope Foundation and Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), the centre will adopt a unique SMART (Specific, Motivation, Adaptive, Relevant, Talent) concept to help seniors cope with an increasing digitalisation of day-to-day life.

Close collaboration with contractor team
The entire engagement process provided insights that informed the design of the space, which was not just aesthetically pleasing, but user-oriented as well. One of the insights gathered was to ensure that the space is designed such that it caters to different learning styles and abilities of seniors while maximising the overall space.
The end result is a flexible space that could be divided into 3 general zones: Social Zone, Learning Zone and Innovation Zone.
